April 2017 FoodVentures: Il Padrino, Meow Meow Cafe, Lemon & Olives, Sage

If I were to be serious about blogging about food, I’d definitely suck at it. I’m too un-picky about food, and am easily satisfied so being a food critique is out. Also, I’m not really the type to eat out often, or venture somewhere out of the way to check out a new place to eat, at least not on my own or purposefully so. Still, as I was going through image folders and cleaning up files I stumbled upon some photos that I thought I should add on my blog, you know, for future reference.

I don’t want to go as far back, so I’ll do this on a monthly basis (except for more extensive reviews from time to time). This post will be on my foodventures for the month of April 2017.

Purrty Nifty Place, this Meow Meow Cafe

Seek and you shall find. XDD It was a Sunday morning, and we are looking for a breakfast place (we seem to do that too often lately). The places at Session Road and Assumption Road were looking pretty meh that day, so we continued to walk on. And then we looked up, saw a sign indicating “Kobe Cafe” on the second floor, and went in.

Unfortunately, said cafe was closed on Sundays. Beside it, however, was another cafe filled with photos and drawings of cats. And on the counter sits a Hello Kitty figure.

And the cafe’s name is MEOW MEOW CAFE. Cute, eh?

So we decided to try it out.

(I’ll probably do a more in-depth review on this cafe once I try out their evening fare, but for now, sharing the pix I took whilst we were there and we had the place to ourselves!)

Look at that wall!! With a sign as huge and as colorful as that, you won’t miss it!

The place is relatively small, and has only around 10 tables. Seeing that it is located right across the University of Baguio, which means it is also a walking distance from the Saint Louis University, it is easy to see that their target market are students. I heard that during the afternoons, this place is packed and hopping with these students.

Cute ceiling, don’t you think? And the seats and tables are cozy, too. However, the ones with the couches have low tables, so be prepared to crouch the whole time you’re eating. My co-worker with scoliosis certainly did not take too kindly to it.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that this is like a cat cafe, cats are not allowed inside, because of strict building rules. The cafe owner said that was the original plan, to allow cats inside, it’s just that the owner of the building does not permit it. Oops.

By the way, while waiting for our order, we had a crash course on cat behavior.

There are several seats on the balcony with this view. In the morning, when traffic is slow, I see this spot as a good place to catch some morning air while eating. But in the afternoons? I don’t think so. Smoke (or smog), traffic sounds…. *shudder*

Here’s our order! I got the Aglio Olio (Php 90.00), which was marked as “NEW” on their Menu at the time. Ate Raquel went for the Carbonara (Php 85.00).

I liked their Aglio Olio, because the flavor was subtle. The carbonara was… well, carbonara. I’m neither here nor there when it comes to carbonara. Haha! I don’t like it, but I don’t dislike it, either. It’s just.. carbonara.

Aren’t the mugs just so cute???

I tried their green tea latte (Php95.00). Green tea lattes are a hit-or-miss for me. There are only a few green tea lattes served locally that I liked. Some were too sweet. Others did not have that “grass-like” aftertaste unique to green tea. Others were tooooooo liquidy for my taste I might as well be drinking hot green tea with cream.

This one, I liked. I didn’t love it, but I liked it. It’s aaaight.

Fun fact about the Hot Meows, the names of the beverages are so adorable. Like Meowchhiate (Macchiato), Catfe MeochaCappurrccino, Catfe Latte, and Carfe Ameowricano.

See the one in the glass kettle? The place also serves a variety of teas, served in these glasses, which you can have unlimited hot water refill. That means it can be for more than two persons.

The staff recommended we try their new fruit tea (Php95.00). It’s basically dried fruit peels and pulps, soaked in hot water, AND TASTES HEAVENLY. I actually bought one pack (same price) later on and used it at home later on with my family. Love it.

Fill ‘er up Breakfast at Il Padrino’s

While waiting for a salon appointment, I thought I should have a full breakfast, knowing it will go on for hours. So I entered this one place that happened to be close to the salon. I kept passing by it whenever I walk by Upper Session Road, but never tried it.

It was quite a discovery I made.

So I ordered their Eggs Benedict and a latte…. and was shocked when the serving came.

BECAUSE DAYUM GURL, THIS IS GOOD FOR TWO OR THREE PEOPLE ALREADY AND I WAS BY MYSELF.

Even the coffee serving was huge which, for a non-coffee lover like myself, was disconcerting. XDD It was a good thing the salon opened late, so I had more than an hour to kill, and slowly work my way through the meal.

The next weekend when Ate Raquel and I decided to have breakfast here, I knew better. XDDD

So we ordered their toast set, and the Eggs Benedict, for sharing.

And this time, no coffee for me, but their summer coolers. Strawberry-Cucumber and Kiwi-Mint smoothies. Don’t they look so colorful? I love anything kiwi, so yeah, I just had to try this one. Of course, nothing beats the actual fruit, but this does what it claims: to help you beat the summer heat, albeit momentarily.

Lemon and Olives, anyone?

After coming from a coworker’s daughter’s birthday party, three of us walked the streets of Outlook Drive until we got to the DECADES restaurant. We entered, got seated, and then checked out the menu. Unfortunately, too many items were unavailable that time, so we got back up, resumed walking and decided to just go to Lemon and Olives instead. (Check out their Facebook page here.)

Please note that we just came from a birthday party, so we were actually stuffed full. However, we just wanted something sweet, and we just wanted to sit down somewhere instead of heading straight home or joining the frenzy at the CBD area.

So we just ordered their signature dish baklava and some pita bread & hummus.

I don’t recall exactly what drinks we ordered, but I remember mine was tamarind and lemon with something. Ate Raquel’s was the freshly squeezed lemon, and the other one was a smoothie. Watermelon, if I’m not mistaken.

Hearty Heart at Sage

A friend and former co-worker had her birthday, but she was away on a trip so she just invited us for her birthday lunch… which ran up to mid-afternoon. It’s a good thing the place we decided to eat at did not mind us hanging out for more than 2 and a half hours!

I will also be making a separate in-depth review of this place, so just a handful of photos for now.

I’ve always been a fan of the Basil Shrimp Pasta of Sage. And no matter how many times I tell myself to try their other offerings, I end up ordering that one. Phew.

It’s just so annoying that I suddenly seemed to develop a food allergy for shrimp and crabs. Like, I noticed how, even when I eat a little of it (even alamang!) my lips tend to appear like it has been stung by a bee. It lasts for about 12 hours or so until it subsides, and it’s so annoying.

That explains my stash of antihistamines in my pouch every time I go out. I don’t want to miss out on yummy food just because of a food allergy, darnit.

The salmon one got rave reviews, and so did the creamy bulalo. Although if you are into bulalo for the soup you’d slurp, this one will probably disappoint you, because the creamy texture won’t allow that.

Oh, and girls, no matter what they say, there will always be room for dessert.

Sage has a selection of no-bake cakes which are yum. We couldn’t help but order three of their various cheesecake offerings, just to have a taste of each one.

And the runaway winner in my books…. is the avocado one!

Oh, and they did not use crushed graham for its base/crust. We asked, and the staff said they use otap instead.

Ugh, writing this blog post up made me hungry. Gotta grab a bite. Laterz!
