I’m having serious temple-withdrawal-symptoms. I need something to shake me up. Good thing I have Jeju posts to make, eh? In this post, I will be talking about the first waterfall we visited while in Jeju, the Jeongbang Waterfall. 
Jeongbang, or also known as Jungbang, Waterfall, is described as the “waterfall that falls straight down to the sea”.
Transcript: Jeongbang Waterfall, falling from a cliff, is 23m high and 10m wide. It has unique scenery not only in Korea but also in the oriental area. It is called the “Jeongbang Summer Waterfall” due to its picturesque scene when viewed from a boat and is one of 10 Scenic Wonders of Jeju Island. Jeongbang Waterfall is famous for the legend of ‘Seobul’ who came to Jeju Island in search for a elixir of eternal life for Chin the powerful Emperor of China 2,000 years ago. After he failed to find the elixir, he carved his name, ‘Seobul, on the cliff of the waterfall and returned to China.
On our way in, we passed by the Seobok Exhibition Hall.
In order to be earn admittance through the gate, you gotta pay the 2,000KRW (USD2.00) entrance fee.
After a bit of a downhill hike, we have arrived!
We spent maybe 20-30 minutes at the Waterfall, then went back up. Passing through the same walls that tell a story all their own.
And since we were already there, we decided to drop by the gardens of the Seobok Exhibition Hall.
Transcript: The legend of Seobul comes from a stone inscription on the wall of the Jeongbang Falls. Seobul was Qin Shi Huang’s envoy from China who came to Jeju to find elixir plants for his emperor.
He sailed towards Yeongju mountain, now Halla Mountain, with hundreds of young children on a fleet of ships. Seobul dropped the anchor by the coast of Jeongbang Waterfall and climbed Yeongju Mountain. He found the elixir plants and sailed towards west instead of returning to China. As he was leaving Seobul left an inscription saying “Seobul has been here” on the wall by Jeongbang falls. Some say that the name “Seogwipo” may also be derived from this.
Seobok Exhibition Hall has collected materials relating to this legend.
